Finish line

October 11th, 2010 No comments

finish line matThere’s an item that’s been on my wish list for a long time. I needed a pick-me-up a couple of weeks ago, so I ordered it. It arrived last week.

Behold! The finish line doormat! When I put it on my wish list, I thought it would be great after a run. Now I think it’s just great because it is a reminder that yes, I am done with the many many tasks of the day and I am home. I have made it through another day. I win!

I wasn’t home when it arrived, so my husband dropped me a line asking what this giant box was on the doorstep and whether our daughter could open it. I told him what it was, and they opened it.

He wasn’t kidding about it being an enormous box. Seriously, Amazon? You had to kill an entire tree to ship me a doormat? With a box that big, it’s easy to see why Em was so eager to open it. Still, Mr. Tvini says that she looked disappointed after it was open.

It went something like this:

Dad: But Mom told us what it was – a doormat.
Em: Yes, I know. I just thought it might be something cool.

Sorry, kid. At least the cat enjoyed it.

It’s way past time to go to bed. There’s another race to be run tomorrow, and that finish line is still a long way off. Night!

Good decision.

There was a crazy guy at the post office yesterday when I was mailing out Jayne hats. He brought in a slip of paper and showed it to the clerk to get his opinion. Apparently the man’s wife had signed her father’s name instead of her own name when she was picking up a package from the father’s P.O box. The man was asking if her signing her own name qualified as tampering with the mail. Apparently he was trying to get some kind of dirt on his “crazy” wife so that he could dismantle her character in court and get custody of his kids. I don’t know about the wife, but based on what the clerks and I saw, there was definitely someone crazy in that relationship.

When I see things like that, it just reminds me that I made the best decision of my life when I married my wonderful husband 16 years ago today. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Love you, guy. Here’s to the rest of our life together.

Happy birthday to me!

2010 Dad giftsGot up, rolled out of bed… and confronted with a horrifying stench, immediately cleaned the catbox. Well, the rest of my birthday had nowhere to go but up!

And indeed it has. Birthday gifts from Dad: Horatio Hornblower DVD box set and 2000 Year Old Man CD set by Carl Reiner and Mel Books. I’ve had my eye on these for a while, so they’re very welcome.
2010 birthday cake
Birthday gifts from Mom: the same birthday cake I’ve gotten every single year since I was about five years old. And I LOVE IT. Not pictured is the wonderful combo birthday/Christmas gift she got me this year which needs its own post.

I have had a raging headache all day long, but it is not dampening my spirits. All I can think is how fortunate I am to have my family so close, in every sense of the word.

I leave you with an audio clip of the 2000 Year Old Man and my permission to take today off in honor of my birthday, which is (or should be) a national holiday. Many happy returns of the day!

Smile and the world smiles with you.

Greenway smile

The weather’s been beautiful the last couple of days, so I’ve seized the opportunity to run. Today I got dressed and walked out the door. It immediately started raining. Sighing, I turned around came back inside and worked more on our current home improvement project, painting the bathroom. My reward for being so industrious? Just as I finished, the rain stopped and the sun came out.

I geared back up and went out to the Greenway. Crossing a bridge, I couldn’t help but notice the stream, swollen from the rain. Little Sugar Creek was in as good a mood as I was. We smiled at each other for a moment, then I went on my way, spirits high for the rest of the day.

Panera cookie
Last week I stopped by Panera Bakery. Their breakfast souffles are a guilty pleasure. I wasn’t in a big hurry, so I let someone in front of me in line. She ordered the last souffle. D’oh!

I really wanted that souffle, but I had to laugh about it. Some days, these things just happen. This morning I decided to try again. Yes! Full rack of souffles! I hadn’t even gotten to the register before the cashier, the same one who helped me last time, sent the manager over to pick out my souffle for me. She laughed with me about the experience, and, overhearing, the manager gave me a free cookie. It was barely 8am and that one experience put a smile on my face for the rest of the day.

Thanks, Panera cafe 1218 on Fairview, your awesome staff won my loyalty and made my day.

Look, I’ve been waiting and waiting for some snow this winter and it just has not happened. Obviously Mother Nature needs some encouragement. To that end, I present the snowiest comedy this side of The Gold Rush. If you’ve got eighteen and a half minutes to kill, please enjoy the comic genius of W.C. Fields in the freakin’ hilarious classic, The Fatal Glass of Beer.
