Call me Bartholomew Cubbins.

Okay, so my daughter wanted a hat like the others I’d made, so I had to knit a THIRD hat. But it was fun. She picked out the yarn herself, and here’s the result. This was the best yet, with the crown decreases working out perfectly to make a cool star-like pattern on the top. I cast on 96 stitches using #6 needles to make a more defined stitch pattern.

Here’s my girl modeling it. You’ll have to turn your head sideways, because I don’t feel like opening up Photoshop this morning just to rotate the picture 90 degrees. I like it. All she needs is a little tie-dyed shirt and she’s ready to follow Phish on tour.

As a side note, I have just about enough yarn left over from the other hats to make another hat. I’ll never be free of the roll-brim beanie!

It’s not easy being green.

kureyon hat unfinishedSo someone saw me knitting the boob hat and wanted one in similar colors. Being the cheap person that I am, I picked out an all-wool yarn from the same manufacturer in colorway 87 and started knitting. However, as I knit it up, I realized that the outside of the skein was deceptive. All the green was tucked way, way inside the ball. It ain’t purple. It ain’t even close.

So now I’m presented with several options. Finish knitting the hat and give it to her, even though it’s not what she thought she was going to get, finish the hat and find someone else who wants it (unlikely, since all my contact in real life is with a four year old), or unravel it, make something like this for myself, and just suck it up and buy some new yarn for her. Opinions?

Project Stash Reduction continues!

Sideways IroWell, since AOL has crapped out on me in the middle of catching up on my DR mail, it’s as good a time as any to show the new scarf. This was another skein of the Noro Iro, but in a different colorway, #45. (Colorway is fancy yarn talk for color.)

I think this yarn shows the striping better (and for a really good shot of it, you can see one of the worst pictures taken of me) when done in long bands instead of short bits. The last one I did in this was knit in a long narrow strip. This one, I did lengthwise, casting on 150 stitches onto #11 needles and then just knitting back and forth until the yarn was gone.

When my daughter saw it, she said “rainbow scarf!” and claimed it as her own. Apparently it doubles as a jump rope. Well, as long as someone’s enjoying it!

…and in the spring, it blooms baby blankets.

Iro scarf on treeI made another scarf, but didn’t have a model, so here it is on the sugar maple in our front yard. The colors are washed out. You can see them better here, and you can also see the nice variations in the yarn.

The yarn is Noro Iro, a Japanese yarn that’s 75% wool and 25% silk. The scarf is knit from one skein, done in a simple knit one purl one rib on #17 needles. The needles are massive – as big around as a fat sharpie marker. However, it knit up in one night (okay, I stayed up late) which is the advantage of knitting on huge needles. The yarn is self-striping. It gradually shades from one color to the next, which means I don’t have to switch yarns and weave in ends and stuff if I want to make something multicolored. $18.98 a skein, but it was my birthday, so what the heck. Plus 20 bucks for a handmade wool and silk scarf isn’t bad.

I’m definitely going to get some Noro Kureyon and make a booga bag once the decks are cleared of all the other projects waiting. First, i finish this lacy purple scarf, then the manly hat, then my hip-hop scarf and hat, and then maybe the Waikiki sweater, then the baby blanket I pick up intermittently, then maybe… maybe…
