Yay!

October 18th, 2007 2 comments

I had to buy some red yarn retail, which isn’t good, but on the up side I now have six more skeins of earflap red! Yay! I just sent out mail to folks who had asked about kits over the last few days. I predict I’ll be winding up a heap of yarn tonight and tomorrow.

Progress

October 17th, 2007 4 comments

Got four Jayne hats out the door yesterday, so I’ll call that productive. Also got in an infinitessimal amount of earflap red, the color I’m lowest on, so production hasn’t completely ground to a halt. Next up are Washington, Australia, Indiana, then several for one person going to several locations. At that point, we’ll be into the orders that were placed on the 10th of September. I do not like being a week behind – this is the first time this has happened since Wear With Style opened. Grr.

However, on the up side, I’ve gotten to work on some non-orange orders. Also, since asked if I could get better quality photos of some of my work, I experimented with a setup that looks a little more professional. Until I get around to building a light box, I guess this’ll do. The trouble with getting good photos for is that most of the stuff I make goes right out the door as soon as it’s done, so I can’t really call it back for a photo shoot. I’ll try to make a better effort in the future, though, since clearly there’s some utility to having nice pics of these things.

In other news, Lamb’s Pride Red Baron is a pretty dead match for Pantone 200, which is the official red of UGA, University of Arkansas, Ohio State, the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, and many other colleges around the country. Sports fan knitters, take note!

While Jayne hats are obviously the main thing I’m working on, I have to occasionally stop and knit something else or I go crazy. So here’s another pattern repeat on the Vinnland socks. I’m really liking the way these are turning out. I’m going to bring them in a little after turning the heel, since my wide feet do not have wide ankles and legs attached to them.

This morning is Couch to 5k, this afternoon is our first Brownie meeting of the year, tonight is the weekly stitch night at Books-A-Million,and of course, there are many Jayne hats to knit in between these activities. All in all, this will be a full day. Time to launch into it!

Zzzz…

October 14th, 2007 No comments

How much of a sleep deficit was I running? I went to bed late on Saturday after staying up to do Jayne stuff… and didn’t wake up until noon on Sunday. And that was only because the phone rang. Ah, bliss.

In spite of the shortness of it, it was a productive day. Stamped up more boxes, wrote more Jayne notes, ripped out an unsatisfactory Jayne hat in untraditional colors and pattern and reworked it so it looks… pretty darned good, if I do say so myself. (, I did get your mail, I’ll take pics of it and a few other things for you hopefully tomorrow.) Did dishes, laundry, picked up long pants in school uniform colors for Emily since the weather’s cooling down. I found the pajamas to the left while shopping for the uniform and just had to buy them. When Emily saw them, she immediately shucked her clothes and climbed in. I hope she’s not sweating too much in bed.

I’m off to bed now, too, to try to stay caught up on my sleep. Y’all have a good night!

horses, cigarettes, and Jayne kits

October 11th, 2007 No comments

Emily told us this morning that she would like a horse from her aunt’s stables. She’d keep the horse in the back yard and bring it inside when it rains. She was laughing as she said this – even she recognizes the impracticality of this plan. It’s still better than her first plan, which was to keep the horse in the washing machine.

Emily has discovered Looney Tunes. We have a box set which she’s enjoying greatly. I’m sure half of these jokes don’t mean anything to her, but then, a lot of these were geared towards adults anyway. The rest, though, she gets. She thinks it’s just delicious how naughty and bad these folks are.

“He shouldn’t go in a mine shaft! Why not?” she’ll ask us, squealing with delight. She knows, she just wants to involve us in the madcap zaniness. They sure don’t show stuff like this on TV anymore. I doubt you’ll find Dora the Explorer with a cigarette dangling from her lips, but the cartoon above showed Bugs rolling one.

Speaking of cigarettes, we were outside at Starbucks yesterday, and someone sat down near us and was about to light one up. I had to put away my Jayne hat knitting because I didn’t want it to smell like smoke, and I think Emily took that as the signal we were going to leave. I told her, “I’m glad we’re leaving, that lady was about to light a cigarette and I don’t like the smell of the smoke.” “What’s a cigarette?” Emily asked. I hadn’t really thought about it, but I guess nobody in her life smokes. Well, good! We had a conversation and then let it drop. I’m not worried about it. The kid won’t eat cinnamon toast if I tell her I put extra cinnamon on it, she’s not going to start experimenting with tobacco.

I took a week off of the couch to 5k program because I was feeling under the weather. I did, however, start back up. Go me! Today will be day two of getting back on the horse.

Hey, look, I brought it all back around to horses again! I’m queen of the segue!

I’m going to pack up and mail a kit, go run, then arrange for more red yarn. This is the last kit for a while. I’ve had to discontinue the kits until I can get more so that I don’t short my finished hat clients. This shall not stand – I want a chicken in every pot and a Jayne hat on every head!

A big shout-out to my fiber godmother, who has sent me TWO cards in the mail. You’re a sweetie! Thanks!

Y’all have a good day!

Knitting.

October 8th, 2007 25 comments

Mo’ Jaynes and Jayne kits. Today I’m knitting yours, , for the Geekstravaganza.

I ripped out the Pomatomus and started up Vinnland. Turtlegirl76 recommended a pattern from Knitting Vintage Socks, and it did have a stitch pattern very similar to Pomatomus, but it had the disadvantage of being in a book which cost $21.95. I put it on my Amazon Wish List since Christmas isn’t that far off, and went with a free pattern instead. I actually really like the way this looks in this yarn!

While figuring out the math for my father’s Charlie Brown sweater stripe, I realized I’d lost the swatch I’d made several months ago. D’oh! So the next non-Jayne project will be a 4×4″ yellow rectangle. Hold me back.

ponk is using wearwithstyle in a design project for university. I really like what he’s done. The color schemes match my personal preferences more closely than the admittedly kicky and fun but very bright tones that designed when we just had to get something up there because orders were coming in and we needed a site, already.

On an unrelated note, if anyone hears of a product which can be used to zap sleep directly into your brain, please let me know.

Good day.

October 5th, 2007 10 comments

Moments ago, my dad sent me a link to a trailer for the new Futurama feature. Thanks, Dad!

Emily has said for the last few days that the girl at school with whom she’s been having trouble is “not my enemy anymore. She’s not quite my friend yet.” But that’s good, both because relations have improved, and because it shows progress from the black/white view that Emily often has of things.

My husband/geek genius has been helping investigate setting up an actual storefront with a checkout cart, etc. It’s an interesting process. My basic html skills aren’t cutting it with this setup, so I may have to learn more about php and forms. Of course, with eight weeks of orders in line, it’s not that crucial to get it up and running, but it would still be nice to have available for already-made goods.

Orders are down to 28 from 32. I know it doesn’t sound like much, but bear in mind they keep coming in while I’m knitting, so any little bit I can whittle the line down helps! Tonight, more Jayne hat knitting while I watch Casablanca. I swear, I’m starting to see Jayne hats everywhere…

Another day, another stroke.

October 3rd, 2007 8 comments

As you can see, the couch to 5k continues. When I exercise vigorously, I turn red. Really, really red. Like so red that people are concerned for me. I haven’t had a heart attack yet, it’s just that my super-fair skin needs little provocation to make me look like a cooked lobster. If you see me jogging down the street, please do not call 911. It’s perfectly normal.

I need to work out a new route. I’m doing okay up until that last leg of the run. It takes me up Mt. Doom, and it’s brutal. Maybe if I walk a little farther before starting the program, it won’t hit in the same place.

illiane turned me on to this really cool feature on the internet. Maybe you already knew about it, but I didn’t. http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/ will let you plot out a route and tell you how far it is. It’s not entirely accurate, because I’ve driven my route and it’s just about exactly two miles, but it comes up as slightly less on that site. The site doesn’t take elevation into account, though, so maybe going up and down the slopes of Mt. Doom is adding some distance.

Jayne orders are picking up speed. Unfortunately, it’s because Halloween is upon us – and I’ve already got an eight week wait. I feel bad for these Browncoats, but it is what it is. Two kits went out yesterday, another two kits and two hats are going out today, and I’m devoting the rest of the morning to Jayne activities. I can also usually knit an entire hat at my weekly stitch session, so that’ll be another one down.

I do love my Browncoats. Check out the sweet art that came along with an order over the weekend. Too neat! The hat she drew is similar to a picture I made for something I’m planning on introducing fairly soon. “Fairly soon” being “whenever I can eke out the time for it” so actually, who knows when it’ll be?

Because all work and no play makes Tvini go crazy, I did pull out the Fleece Artist that I got as part of a sock kit swap from (thanks again!). I’ve been wanting to make Pomatomus since it was published in 2005. I just love the way these socks look.

Unfortunately, it turns out that I don’t love the way they knit. I tried to put in a lifeline before I started the pattern, but it was so tight that I gave it up. Twelve rows in and I’ve already lost a stitch. The twisted knits make tinking back a giant pain in the keister. I’m knitting it on size 1s instead of the recommended 2s because I’m a loose knitter, but even so, these stitches are pretty darned tight. I think I may abandon this and use the yarn for something else, maybe Embossed Leaves.

All right, back to the Jayne mines!

One out of three ain’t bad.

September 27th, 2007 2 comments

My yellow yarn finally came. I ordered it in April, so yes, I am incredibly happy to see it. Now if we can just get the orange and the red to arrive.

The good news/bad news is that Brown Sheep is raising their rates again, meaning my costs for yarn are going up. I know I said this last year, but this year I really may have to raise prices. I hate to do it, so I’ll crunch some numbers and see how everything shakes out. On the up side, because this batch of yarn was ordered before the price went up, they’re honoring the old price. Yay!

Do you see anything in that picture that might give a hint as to a new Firefly-type product? Maybe something related to the keychain I made for myself so I won’t lose my freakin’ keys all the time? I need to finish up the item in question so I can show y’all properly.

In other news, my calves ache and it hasn’t even been 12 hours yet. I’m glad the “couch to 5k” program is only every other day. I’m gonna feel this in the morning.

Standard update

September 26th, 2007 8 comments

Haven’t updated in a few days, so I reckon I oughtta. Unfortunately, while I do have a new knitted object, I can’t display pics of it yet because it hasn’t reached its recipient. And no, it’s not the Charlie Brown sweater. I don’t knit that fast.

Hat orders have plateaued. I’m unsurprised. The wait is currently up to eight weeks. That seems to be the point at which people decide to either wait to order or look elsewhere. Can’t say as I blame anyone; that’s a long time to wait without receiving something you’ve paid for. I predict the wait will probably stay eight weeks until after Christmas. I’m being very faithful in my Jayne hat knitting to try to get that wait down.

This morning, I’m finishing up the second of two charity hats for some Aussie Browncoats, who are using proceeds from their booth at Armageddon Expo to benefit the Motor Neurone Disease Foundation of Australia. It’s an organization focused on support and care. I’m glad that I’m in a position to help.

Brownies haven’t started up yet this year. We have a bit of a dilemma. There’s a new space we can use that’s much closer to our homes, but we have to be out by 5:45. This is actually more convenient for all of us moms, but our co-leader, who doesn’t have a girl in our troop, works uptown in a fairly demanding job. This would be a longer drive for her and she’d probably have to take off early. So, do we move to a place and time that’s more convenient for the parents and probably lose our co-leader? Or do we stay where we were last year and keep her? I’ve got an e-mail in to the co-leader to see how she feels about this, and then I’ll check with the other moms. I don’t want to throw anyone to the wolves. I’m on the fence about what’s best for the troop.

I got an e-mail from my mother last night mentioning that a little girl I used to babysit when I was a teen is now a knitter (among other things). She gave me a link to the young woman’s site. I left a comment on her blog, and she found me on ravelry. Looking at her FOs, she’s quite good! I wish I could take some credit for that, but I wasn’t knitting when I was babysitting her. It reminds me of how The Fabulous Jane Prater was my eighth grade English teacher, and now we both go to knitting guild together. Small, small world.

Finally, good news! A dear, dear friend will be moving from Maryland to Charlotte later this year. That’s her on the left in the white shirt. I am beyond excited about this. She was a college roommate and the maid of honor in my wedding. As an added bonus, her husband is a good friend of my husband, so they’re also pleased. I’m totally psyched to have another friend down here.

Wait, does this mean I have to clean the house? Yikes, I better start now.

Anyway. It’s a good morning, hopefully leading to a good day. I hope you all have the same!
