Unexpected change in schedule
My daughter went to the dentist today to have her cavity filled, and also to get the little shark tooth incisor on the bottom that she had in front of her permanent tooth yanked. It’s been there for months and hasn’t fallen out on its own. I think the reasoning was, “well, since we’re in there, might as well.” The appointment was for 9, but they didn’t see us until about 9:30, so we didn’t get out of there until after 10. They suggested that I watch her today to be sure she doesn’t chew on her lip or cheek, so I kept her home. I wasn’t expecting a home day. Ah, well. At least she’s not sick, per se.
When they put the nitrous tube over her nose, she said, cautiously, “but they won’t take my nose.” We reassured her that no, the dentist was only going to work on her teeth, and her nose was hers to keep forever and ever.
The procedure was more elaborate than I remember from the one filling I had as a kid (I’ve got none now, it was a baby tooth). There was a metal ring around the tooth, and a rubber sheet attached to that covering the rest of her mouth, but she was a real trouper. She just accepted it all as “okay, this is what we’re doing now” although we did have to hold her hands down gently, since she couldn’t otherwise resist the temptation to touch and see what was going on. If I never see them jab needles into my daughter’s gums again, it will be too soon. Her bravery earned her a toy, one she’s been asking for since last Christmas and which I had found on eBay and stashed away. So she was very happy about that.
We also made tapioca pudding, the traditional comfort food of the women in my family. Got a sniffle? Have some tapioca. Home from the hospital after major surgery? Have some tapioca. Just had a filling? Have some tapioca. Going back generations, we’ve known that tapioca cures all ills.
Our phone was out last night from about 4pm until about 11pm, meaning our internet was down too. It made me very glad that I didn’t schedule that alteration session for Dragonrealms that I had considered. Tonight I think I’ll be too wiped out, since I was stamping Jayne hat boxes last night and didn’t get to sleep until 1am.
Mom, just pretend you didn’t read that and that I’m getting plenty of sleep. Denial is everybody’s friend! And I’ll get to bed earlier tonight, honest.
Right now my daughter is lying on the couch watching our DVDs of the first season of The Muppet Show. It’s a bit odd to hear a seven-year-old say, “I want to see Connie Stevens!”
The hubby gets back into town tomorrow night and I will be very glad to see him. Plus we’re playing Psychonauts together, which has turned out to be very fun and very much of the “Grim Fandango” sensibility. The dialogue and feel is similar, even if it is more shoot-em-uppy. I want to play some more! Come back, geek partner!
Aww, poor munchkin. Sounds like she behaves about a thousand times better than I do at the Dentist. Takes a valium just to get me in the door!
Psychonauts is insane, I kinda love it. Haven’t actually tried it myself, but had fun watching hubs play. 😉

Your daughter is so much braver than I am at the dentist! I’m horrendously wussy about the whole thing. I can’t stand seeing the instruments coming towards my face, and anything past a cleaning I make them knock me out for. 😀
