What to knit for a baby.

My kid’s first grade teacher is going out on leave in early April. I’m thinking I should knit something for her upcoming baby boy.

Wool and angora. Cuuuute, but not super-practical for washing.

A wool/cashmere blend. Not super-practical, again, but man is it soft. I’ve got some nice blues, too.

Machine washable wool, but sized for 12 months. Difficult to size down unless I re-write it, which I guess I could do. I’ve actually written a pattern booklet for this one up, and some local yarn shops have expressed an interest in carrying it. I need to get off my keister and take a better picture of it for that purpose.

Swirly madness for the standard umbilical cord hat. I do have some blue/brown/green Noro Lily, which is what this yarn is.

Superwash wool. I’ve got a lot of this leftover from ‘s baby socks, but it but maybe too “girly.” I’m not sure how traditional this teacher is. By the way, that was a super-sweet thank you note that sent. 🙂

Cotton strawberry hat. Some things are just classic.

I don’t think she’d think it was Satanic, but you never know.

Rawr! I could probably size it down, but might be bumpy on the back for a baby who can’t hold their head up.

Or do I bite the bullet and do what I probably should do for this woman who teaches my daughter for six hours a day and make a sweater? I know I’ve got Jill Eaton’s Minnies floating around here somewhere, and I’ve got this fantastic Crystal Palace cotton chenille, hand-dyed by the lovely and talented .

These aren’t the only options. I can still wing something, it’s just that time is short. And I am not making a baby blanket.

I dunno. I just need to be sure I’m thinking of how the end result will feel to the recipient, and not just of what seems cool for me to knit. I’m paralyzed with indecision!

Thoughts?

I reeeally like the first one (so pretty), but the dinosaur-style one just rocks, dude. However, I agree that it might be better for an older kid due to said bumpiness. So I guess I vote for the first.

Could you redesign the dinosaur hat so that the spikes/plates/whatever-you-call-them (preggobrain is in full force) go up the sides instead of up the back?

Ooooooooh, that strawberry hat calls to me! I should order it and matching mittens for M real soon now so she can have it by next winter.

With limited time, I vote strawberry hat. If you have time and a pattern, though, I’ve heard that new moms really love those baby sweaters that zip up in the back instead of the front . . .

“Practical” isn’t necessarily something a newborn baby needs. It’s not like they’re running around in the mud with it!

What’s the ambient temperature going to be when the baby gets here? That first set of hat-and-booties may be just right for a newborn but not needed in June, ya know? Personally, I think the strawberry is adorable!

I love the yellow and black one and the strawberry hat.
Could the strawberry hat be done as a slightly more masculine fruit say a yellow capsicum or a tomato (same but no seeds?)
I think the satanic hat would look much less satanic if the ears were pink on one side? that is super cute being able to tie it on.

Everything is fantastic! I favor the swirly umbilical hat & option #1. When you say impractical for the first two you mean washing-wise correct? Or too warm for summer – when is the baby due?

In the end I think you’re kid’s teacher will love whatever you make because each piece is very lovely.

Without a doubt, narrow it down to the strawberry or dinosaur… Do you know what the bub’s gender is? I’d say strawberry for a girl, dinosaur for a boy. Also, I’d love to own either myself, haha.

Well! Coming from someone who owns that lovely pair of booties with the heart, I can at least voice my opinion on those. I LOVE those booties, they are sooooo soft and so pretty. However… they are soooo soft, that one little kick and they go sliding right off. Hee.

So my opinion is use that yarn on the socks cause it’s awesome yarn and I’m betting the socks will have better staying power!

Oh, and by the way, those booties are going in a collage that I am making to hang on Mia’s wall. She’s only ever received three handmade things, so I want to be sure to encase them for posterity.

Awwwww! That’s so sweet, thanks! That’s my own pattern, and I haven’t made them for anyone else, so she’s got a one-of-a-kind item there.

I hadn’t thought about them sliding off. I’ll keep that in mind for the future!

Heh. Everybody loves that dinosaur hat. A teenager in the Midwest somewhere ordered a grownup size and could be wearing it right now, for all I know.

(This is really an excuse to tell you that you’re at #1. Casting on today!)
