Renfest

Had a wonderful time at the Renaissance Festival with and her friends. Getting away from house and home for a bit was exactly what I needed.

I spent a fair amount of time looking for the perfect silver ring for my husband. On our wedding day, he took off his favorite (and only) piece of jewelry, a silver ring with a geometric pattern on it, for the ceremony. He left it in the chapel’s dressing room. When he realized the next day that he hadn’t picked it up, we called the chapel, only to find that it was gone. I went by and looked on the grounds for it, but it wasn’t there. St. Mary’s Chapel is used by a lot of couples, so we think somebody else probably snagged it. He still looks sometimes at silver jewelry places to see if he can find exactly that same design, but he never has. Neither have I. But I still check every chance I get. No luck today, but I’ll keep trying. Hey, it’s only been eleven years, something might still turn up.

While at the fest, I realized that there was an entire wing that we had missed when the hubby and daughter and I came a few weekends ago with my in-laws. The area has a petting zoo and camel and elephant rides. Dang! Well, as a reward for my husband’s performance above and beyond the call of duty this weekend, taking care of our daughter while I worked EXTRA HARD on a wedding for Dragonrealms yesterday, and also for watching her so I could get out today, I’m taking our daughter off his hands tomorrow and she and I will go to the RenFest tomorrow. It’s the very last day. The weather today was absolutely perfect, sunny and warm but not hot, so hopefully it’ll be nice tomorrow. This is killing our budget, but it’ll be worth it in mental and emotional benefits.

However, tomorrow I will be leaving earlier. Lesson learned: don’t leave right at closing. I spent literally a half hour in my car in one place waiting for traffic to move. On the up side, I did use the time to knit the shell of another cunning Jayne hat for a guy in Massachussetts. This is why I always bring knitting with me.

And speaking of knitting, I saw some people walking around at the fest wearing garter stitch scarves knit longways out of Lion Brand homespun paired with other crappy yarn on huge size 17 needles. I thought, as I usually do, “aw, they’re just starting out. That doesn’t look that great, but they’ll get better, and I feel good for them for being able to wear their handiwork out. I’ll bet they’re proud.” Then I see that there was a booth there where the merchant was selling wooden hair combs and also those scarves.

Now, some of them may have had higher quality materials. I didn’t happen to see those. And I know she’s got expenses to cover, like the booth and her time. But $45? For Lion Brand yarn on huge needles for not-very-long scarves? It’s not that I don’t think the amount of work involved would merit the money, it’s that I wouldn’t use material that cheap on something I was going to sell unless someone specifically asked me to. And then I’d try to talk them out of it. I’m just a snob that way. Regardless, nice work if you can get it, sister.

I picked up a little hair thingie for my daughter. I got a model with beads of a type they don’t use now, so I got it at a discount. She really likes it. It’s the kind of thing she likes to fiddle with with her hands – she does like to have some motion going on all the time. And she enjoyed playing with it to see what kinds of shapes she could make.

I came in, and the hubby said, “we’re having steak tonight.”
I said, “We are?”
He looked at me and said, deadpan, “Yes. Yes we are.”
Well, he certainly put in his time. So I’m off for now to provide my man with a steak. Looks like an excellent end to an excellent day.
