PT Bruiser

Am I correct in thinking that physical therapy should not leave you with bruises over the area which was “massaged?” There are more bruises, but there’s only so much purpled fishbelly-white abdomen you need to see.

It’s been 20 years since I last had any physical therapy, but this just can’t be right.

That does seem wrong. I never came away with bruises, and I’ve done a lot of PT for various problems.

D: That can’t be right. I’ve only been to PT a couple times, but he never bruised me!

Looks like he was doing some very deep tissue work. Still, thats a nasty bruise for a “massage”.

Hmmmmm, I’d check with your doctor and or speak with the sadistic person who gave you the bruises. I have lymphedema in my legs and the therapist has to press hard on my legs but even HE doesn’t leave bruises (I’m sore, but not bruised).

That is quite alarming. If it were me, I’d be asking questions of my personal physician and PT. It could be that they used too much force on you and they need to hear your alarmed reactions now, instead of later when they could think that perhaps you were overreacting or it was really not that much bruising.

I spoke to her today and told her I wasn’t comfortable with how things were going, and I did show her the bruises. I took pictures on Friday, too, in case I needed them. Anyway, therapy’s on hold for now while I re-evaluate what might need to be done.

I hope you’re feeling better 🙁 Good luck with how that goes.

BTW I asked a PT friend of mine about whether this was acceptable / within the to-be-expected limits and she says she has not personally had this experience, she is also aware that some folks may bruise easily or that the session may have inadvertantly exceeded your tolerance level. (And of course that this would have meant a painful session.. which I gather you had.) Conversation with said PT would be much encouraged and should you decide to continue the sessions, keep conversation and feedback going throughout the session so that you can both keep it at a manageable level that will provide you with just the benefits and not the additional coloring or aches.. I don’t think this is supposed to fall into the ‘no pain, no gain’ category, at least not at that level.
