A process-of-elimination game made by my smart daughter. I used to love these when I was a kid. She had me do it, and then she made another one afterward. Good times.

We got back her report card, which was satisfactory. It’s the stupid standardized testing that kills her.

Fishwatch 2009: I think Kathleen might have a mild case of fin rot. I’m not sure. Her fins look a little more ragged than they did when we brought her home, but it might be my imagination. It would be caused mainly by her not having clean enough water, and since this is the first fish we’ve had, it’s very possible that I’ve been too slack with this as I learn how to take care of her. Em feeds her quite responsibly, but it seems a bit much to ask her to change the water and clean the tank without injuring the fish, so I handle that.

I’m going to change her water this morning anyway, so I guess I’ll stop by the pet store first and pick up some additives.

Aside from that, it’s all Jayne hats, Jayne hats, Jayne hats today.

With Bettas you want to clean the bowl and change the water once a week. Also use the water conditioning drops if you haven’t been.

I think some bettas have wispy fins like that, though.

any other symptoms? Our beta had rather tattered looking fins at the edges. Turns out that just happens at times, and certain breeds actually have tattered looking fins normally.

It’s true. Certain breed of betas do have tattered or wispy looking fins normally. Are there any other symptoms? If not, it may be your fish maturing and its fins are coming into their own, per se.

and I apologize for the double post. My oldest son was hovering over my elbow and bumped me, causing me to click away from this window. Reposted not realizing the first had gone through. And now it seems I have triple posted to the same comment. Shutting up for now lest anyone suspect I am spamming. Mmmmm….spam….

Ha! I won’t suspect you’re spamming unless you start offering products to enlarge my… uh… intellect.

She doesn’t have any other symptoms. The general consensus online is that it’s not fin rot, but that she could be a little stressed out or could be biting or tearing her fins. I haven’t seen her biting, and there’s nothing jagged enough in her bowl to tear on, so I’m just changing her water more often and I’ve also added some mild medicine to the water for now, just in case. She seems happy enough now and has made a few tiny bubbles at the surface, which apparently is a good sign.

And yes, I know it’s really a male fish. Force of habit.
