Last day of soccer
I went to pick up Em early because a) I wanted to see the World Cup Finals, and b) it was pretty cloudy. Well, on the drive there, “pretty cloudy” turned into torrential downpour. My clothes were plastered to me, just on the walk from the car to the outbuilding. Where they weren’t. Nor were they in the first gym I went to. They were in the “little gym” which was an indoor basketball court. (Did I mention this was a ritzy private school?) There were about 20 pairs of shoes just outside the doors. The kids had a bunch of balls out and were all running around in their stockingfeet kicking balls all over the place. Em was, of course, having a field day.
My husband had it right when he said, “BEST DAY OF SOCCER CAMP EVAR!!!”
There was another pair of shoes identical to Em’s in the foyer. Another mom and I determined that they were the same size, and had both been newly purchased, so there was really no way to tell them apart. So we may have come home with another kid’s shoes. We also came home with a soccer ball, a free gift with the camp. Yay!
On the down side, my phone fell into a stream in the parking lot. This is my workhorse Nokia 3390, which I got in 2001, I think. It can’t take pictures, or do anything a more modern phone could do, but until today I’d have said it could withstand a nuclear blast. It still powers up, but I’m not getting any bars, and it doesn’t want to connect outgoing calls. However, there’s still water dripping out of it, so I’m not writing it off yet. Let’s hope it recovers. I’m fond of my little workhorse.
Okay, I’ve done a little cleaning in the den, I need to do a little more. Things have kind of reached critical mass in there. Where’s Hercules and his shovel when you need him?
My Nokia, which I loved, was a total workhorse. For Christmas, my husband surprised me with a new phone…. The phone company turned off the Nokia and refused to reactivate it. Sob. The new one is weensy and slips down in my bag, and I can’t find it when it’s ringing. I hate it.
My older daughter, allegedly normal, was never a participant either. She went to stuff, she just wouldn’t do what all the children were doing, not in soccer, not in Brownies, not in the Suzuki violin lessons, etc. We were pretty embarrassed as parents when she was hiding under our chairs while all the other kids were out there happily. Our determined smiles must have been painful to see…. Today? Perfectly normal, competent young adult.

I recommend taking the back off and battery out, and laying it out to dry at least over night. The less residual water the better.

Put it in the freezer. That will help with the moisture. No really! That’s what the tech guy said to do when i did a similar thing back in ’04. Worked a charm.
2 hours.

Ahhh! The Nokia 3310!! (That’s what I know it as)
That is the workhorse indeed. Probably the best ever phone by Nokia. It is a total brick. You can drop it, drive a car over (as my friend did…) and it’ll be fine. (Well…if you’re lucky anyway.)
Hope the phone is ok. I can’t give any suggestions since water is a very unknown element and it’s hard to know what the best solution is. 🙁 I’d say service centre, but it’s an obsolete phone and ow, charges.

I used a food saver canister and the hot sun on mine to get moisture out.
the phone worked afterwards, even the lcd, which shocked both my husband and me, but there were other parts of the phone which no longer worked, like the camera and the faceplate controls. Oh well.
A friend’s mother dropped hers into the kitchen sink. They buried the phone in uncooked white rice and it apparently did the trick.
If you have silica (dessicant) gel beads, that would help too.

oh yes and battery, definitely out. if the circuitry has shorted though, no amount of drying is going to help.

Re: the phone, definitely let it dry out overnight at the very least. Morgan dropped his in a golf course pond this week while he was building a set for a commercial, and he took it apart, let it dry overnight, and the next morning it worked just fine. So I’m hopeful for you.

Thanks! I found this info on how to deal with this that said basically the same thing. My phone was in a bowl of rice all night, so we’ll see today!

Secret Tip
This might be out of date now (meaning your phone is probably already dried out by now!); but if you put your phone into a bowl of uncooked rice, they will draw the moisture out of the phone. This also work really well with iPods.

Re: Secret Tip
Thanks! Great minds think alike – I actually wound up doing this that very same night. It was touch and go the following day, but the phone does work fine now!
