The one thing I wanted most on my birthday, that I was least likely to get?

SNOW!

AND IT’S SNOWING!

First snow of the season here in southern NC. I’m dancing my snow dance everywhere, including in public! See if I care!

COULD! NOT! BE! HAPPIER!!

More knitting stuff.

That Pink Bag of Doom was SO pink that it actually stained my plastic needles. That’d be them on the right.

One 7-foot (pre-felting) handle is done, the other is half done, and now it’s on the back burner while I do Jayney stuff again.

As a side note, one of the handles on my 2004 Booga Bag (pictured here blocking and covered with fluff) is nearly worn through from me carrying too much in it for too long. I may have to actually – gasp! – BUY a purse!

In trying to find the softest possible green yarn for a hat for a friend, I’ve been coming up snake-eyes. I found some heavenly-soft Misti Suri Alpaca, an alpaca/silk blend, that is like buttah. Unfortunately, it’s also a much lighter green than I’d like.

I do not want my friend to look like a chia.

I may order the darker green pictured on the Misti Alpaca site. I’d love to find something even softer, (Rowan Cashsoft DK?) but I hate to order something specifically for its softness when I haven’t been able to touch it first.

I’m very open to suggestion for super-soft yarns, although I’m trying to stay away from anything too textured, like Chinchilla, just because it would obscure the pattern of Odessa by Grumperina, which is what I’d be knitting.

In health news, the same stomach crud is upon me tonight as last night. Could it be the Thin Mints? Say it ain’t so!

Jayne yarny goodness!

Behold! My yellow arrived a day early! I’m back in business, baby!

The big cones are about 2000 yards each, and the small ones are about 400. Woot! I’m Jayne-in’ it up!

As for last night, it was a good news/bad news kind of thing.

There was a meeting of our local knitting guild branch last night, and I reeeeeaallly wanted to go. It was a) knitting with some people I knew, including my old 8th grade English teacher, b) at a facility directly across the street from my house, and c) hosting a guest speaker – a Godiva chocolatier! With samples! It’s like the perfect storm of my interests!

Unfortunately, I forgot about it until it was nearly time, then rushed to get home just before it started. At which point, I was immediately stricken with some kind of stomach bug. ARGH! Chocolate! Knitting! Adult conversation! Right across the street! AAAARRRGGGGHHH!!!

Okay, done pouting now.

On the up side, Girl Scouts started selling cookies yesterday, and the hubby brought home two boxes of Thin Mints, which he knows are my favorites. So after my stomach settled, I did still get to knit and eat a little chocolate, and the evening wasn’t a total loss. My birthday this year is turning out like Hanukkah. In fact, let’s just call it Tvinikkah and I’ll just sit back and watch the goodies roll in.

Dancin’ in the Mystery Bunker

February 7th, 2006 6 comments

Daughter’s back in school today, so as I work on the 6′ scarf of doom (almost done!) I’m watching Bride and Prejudice, which is kind of Bollywood except that it’s mostly in English. For the first number, Naveen Andrews is front and center in the big Indian song and dance number. It’s a little jarring to see Sayid gettin’ his MC Hammer on. Somebody totally, totally needs to make an animated gif of that.

By the way, the scarf looks faboo. Wish I could keep it!

Early birthday goodness!

February 6th, 2006 20 comments

So today, my daughter’s home sick with a little cold (emphasis on little), and she doesn’t want to go anywhere, including the post office. This is bad, because I have three kits and some yarn for swap that need to go out. Fortunately, the hubby is coming home for lunch, so I can go out then. This is par for the course for him, good guy that he is.

I’m stewing a little, but trying to keep the proper spirit of “this is why I stay home in the first place, to take care of my daughter, and that’s most important” but still sometimes thinking of all the stuff I need to do.

I’m also thinking about how I have exactly enough yellow yarn to start ONE new Jayne hat, and my mondo shipment of yellow yarn isn’t due to arrive until Wednesday, and kind of mentally pacing.

Last night, I started thinking, “I could use a nice pick-me-up, but I haven’t got a lot of extra dough. Maybe I’ll trade some of my yarn stash for stuff on my Amazon wishlist. I’ll just go update that.”

I updated it some last night, then realized that the one thing I wanted MOST had mysteriously dropped off my wish list. Stupid Amazon! I tried to re-add it three times, with my husband looking over my shoulder, but the site kept telling me that the item was already on my wish list, although I clearly couldn’t see it. Stupid STUPID Amazon! Hubby agreed, quite the mystery.

So that’s the picture. Frustrated, plans up in smoke, irritated. And here’s where the eternal optimist in me wins again.

What do you think arrived today? Ding ding ding! You’re right. The mystery item, my #1 wish list want. The Complete Thin Man Collection! Man, I love those movies! I guess the site wasn’t updating because it had been ordered and was en route.

The hubby got it for me, which means the whole time he was looking over my shoulder, he knew what the heck was going on, he just couldn’t say. What a sweetie. Now I have something we’ll both enjoy, and man, is my day better.

Life’s good.

Be careful what you ask for.

My kid’s kindergarten teacher wanted a felted purse. Hot pink. Stripe of novelty yarn.

(Unfelted, no straps yet. CD for scale)

I’m trying to decide whether to put some purple piping along the edges, since there’s purple Cascade behind the novelty yarn. Well, it meets her requests, so hopefully she’ll be happy!

This one? Got it in DaNang.

So just now, I was carrying some laundry from the bedroom to the washing machine. I tried to stack some more in my arms, as I had a big pile I was kind of holding in place with my chin. I brought my right hand up, and my thumbnail caught my chin and left a gash.

So help me, if this scars, I’m making up some cool adventure to go with it. “I got it while taming lions” sounds better than “freak laundry accident.”

Baby socks

February 1st, 2006 2 comments

Since panzermama got her parcel in the mail, I can now post info on the baby socks. This has been previously posted to the knitting channel, I just like having a record elsewhere.

Tale of woe about mis-reading gauge, shortcuts, and Lorna’s Laces sport below cut.
