Very Knitcentric Day

At 4:30pm on the very last day of ‘s Interim House contest, I put a care package in the mail to the fine folks at Interim House. Blog about their knitting program here.

That’s a ball of Noro Iro, a #11 needle, and my pattern for a 1-ball sideways Iro scarf. It’s very simple, but gets great results.

Sideways Striped Scarf pattern:
1 ball Noro Iro (75% wool, 25% silk)
US size 11 needles
Loosely cast on 150 stitches.
Knit 10 rows.
Loosely cast off.
Drape around your neck and vogue, or whatever the kids do these days.

For the baby project, I decided on the Baby Pullover pattern from Knitting Pure & Simple, since it’s knit in the round with no seaming and I knew I’d be in a hurry. I didn’t notice the yardage on the pattern when I purchased it though:

Whaaaaa?

That’s a lotta yarn for a baby pullover! There was no erratum on the site for this pattern. Another yarn store had the same pattern, same yardage. So… uh… okay. Maybe I’m missing something. I went up to The Needlecraft Center in Davidson and perused their Lorna’s Laces Worsted. They only had one skein in a solid-ish blue, at 225 yards per skein. Crap.

I didn’t want to buy two skeins, so I started home, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that I just really, really wanted to work with the Lorna’s Laces. It’s machine-washable, soft, and pretty. So I went back to the store and picked up two skeins of a variegated colorway. Before checking out, though, I looked at their patterns. They had the same pattern, but with a yardage of 200 (252, 325, 395) yards. Okay, that’s more like it. The misspelling of “stockinette” in the original should have been a tip-off, too.

In a rare move for me, I actually bought the yarn that the model was knitted from (I think). One skein of worsted, one skein of sock, both held together.

I wrote the designer when I got home to see what the correct yardage actually was before I wound the yarn up, and she said that the smaller yardage was correct. Good! I’m set to go!

Jayne hats and kits went off to Glasgow and Wokingham, Berkshire in the UK today. Connecticut is on the needles, to be followed by Canada and then a Jayne hat + a grownup-sized rainbow beanie + this blue and purple scarf to a single customer the UK. The scarf is double-knit, making it the Warmest. Scarf. Ever.

The cabled cap is on hold while I work on other peoples’ stuff, but I’m feeling much more relaxed about everything now that I’ve had a little time off. Aaaaahhh.

Tonight, I watch Topper with Cary Grant and Constance Bennett, eat ribs, and then (after thoroughly washing my hands) swatch for the sweater. Bliss.

P.S. Thanks for showing me how to html-ize my pics to wrap text, !

I love the color on that yarn! I’m not a big “blue” fan, but man — the variegated skein really accents it marvellously! The swatch you showed in your next post makes me want to take up knitting again. Maybe when I get tired of quilting…
